The pencil that pays tribute to light and darkness

Limited edition

  • Being a special edition that pays tribute to the change that Art generates. For this, Blackwing presents a special crackled design that glows in the dark and a new 2X firm graphite specially formulated for this version.
  • In 1973, art was at the forefront of a cultural shift. The U.S. military had just withdrawn from Vietnam after nearly two decades, and mid-century optimism had given way to uncertainty. Art, even when created to appeal to the masses, took on a darker tone. The highest-grossing film of 1973, The Exorcist, and the best-selling album, Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon, gave us a glimpse of the cultural panorama of the time.
  • The following year, a new wave of art—films like Chinatown and albums like Bob Marley's Natty Dread—shed light on a broken system. And he gave us the tools to understand it. Art reflects the world around us and helps us process complex issues so we can move forward. Leonard Cohen once said, “There is a crack in everything. “This is how the light comes in.” Art creates cracks in the darkest places in the world, letting in the light of knowledge.
  • Fifty years later, Blackwing 2 recognizes the role of art in creating change. Each pencil features a glow-in-the-dark cracked design that plays on the duality of art and the challenging realities that inspire it. Each pencil also includes our firmest graphite yet: a special 2X firm graphite formulated especially for this version.

Blackwing pencils were originally introduced by Eberhard Faber Pencil Company in the 1930s. Their cult following included John Steinbeck, Vladimir Nabokov, Truman Capote, Chuck Jones who proudly used the Blackwing 602 to create Bugs Bunny and many other characters from Looney Tunes. He stated that a pen is full of ink, but the Blackwing is full of ideas. In 2010, Palomino launched the reissue of the legendary pencils that disappeared in 1990.
